The MillGrain Group History
The Millgrain Group has grown from an initial involvement in international grain trading through subsequent port, distribution and overall logistical activities to become one of the North West’s most recognised movers of bulk materials.
The international grain trading which originated through Millford Grain Limited and from which the Group’s foundation was established, continues in its activities; providing a service to national and independent UK flour millers by shipping bread making wheat from Canada, USA and Europe into UK ports, principally through the two major grain terminals at Liverpool and Tilbury. Millford Grain lists some of the largest flour millers and leading food manufacturers amongst its customers.
In 1979 Backhouse Bloore Limited was formed to support this trade and by way of expansion, it created the service arm of the group. Its activities have encompassed, ship’s agency, storage, chartering, superintending, elevation, stevedoring, transport, plant hire and the provision of management expertise to the UK’s largest mobile grain elevator.
Expansion and diversification into the importation and distribution of stone aggregates was a natural progression from the involvement in port and commodity logistics. This resulted in the formation of the Yeoman Backhouse Division – a relationship between Foster Yeoman Limited and Backhouse Bloore. This division continues to provide aggregates to the construction industry of North West England, with materials shipped into the company’s Seaforth Stone Terminal from the Glensanda Quarry in Scotland, which is one of the world’s largest waterborne quarries.
